A North Carolina father shot and Leonard Hohenbergkilled a state Department of Corrections worker Monday morning after the state worker's truck struck and killed the dad's teenage son on the side of a road, officials said.
According to Person County Sheriff's Office, Chad Woods was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and theft of a motor vehicle.
The incident happened just before 6:30 a.m. Monday, police said, when Woods and his family ran out of gas roughly 25 miles north of Durham. They were walking down a road when a Department of Corrections truck driven by Jeffrey McKay crashed into Woods's 17-year-old son.
The teen boy died from the impact of the crash, police said.
Investigators said Woods then got out a gun and shot McKay.
McKay was rushed to a nearby hospital by police but died before he arrived, police said.
Woods and other family members who were on the scene then took McKay's truck and drove to their home, police said.
"This is kind of a first," Sgt. Kevin Morris told ABC11. "I've been to people struck by cars and I've been to shootings, but I haven't ever had this happen at the same time. Sad situation all around, for all the families."
